Prepositions of Time 2

This week is a continuation from last week and I will introduce 4 more temporal prepositions.

in – used to indicate a point in time of a week, month, season or century or a point in the future.

Ex:

(1) Ich lese das Buch in der nächsten Woche. I will read the book next week.

(2) Im Juni ist das Wetter schön. In July the weather is lovely.

(3) Wir fahren im Winter nach Italien. We drive in Winter to Italy.

(4) Mozart ist im 18. Jahrhundert geboren. Mozart was born in 1800.

(5) Er ist in fünf Minuten zurück. He is back in 5 minutes.

nach – used with say the time or refers to a point in time after an event. It is followed by the Dativ.

Ex:

(1) Kommst du nach dem Film zu mir? Do you come to me after the Film?

(2) Es ist fünf nach zwei. It is five minutes past two (2:05).

vor – used to indicate how long ago did the event/action take place or to say the time. It is followed by the Dativ.

Ex:

(1) John ist vor einer Stunde in die Bibliothek gegangen. John went to the library one hour ago.

(2) Vor 19 Uhr werde ich nicht zu Hause sein. I will not be home before 7:00pm.

(3) Es ist fünf vor zwei. It is five minutes to two (1:55).

gegen – used to indicate approximate time of day or clock times.

Ex:

(1) Wir kommen gegen Abend zurück. We will come back around evening.
